Assailants believed to be Boko Haram members have invaded Debiro village in Hawul local council in Borno State, shooting and slitting the guts of defenseless villagers.
Witnesses say 20 people were killed in the attack.
The assailants also set houses ablaze.
Locals say security personnel were not on ground to repel the bandits who unleashed mayhem unchallenged.
Hawul, which borders neighbouring Adamawa State, is over 200 kilometers away from Maiduguri.

The Department of State Security Service Imo State Command has arrested six suspected kidnappers, including one female, for allegedly kidnapping one Nnawike Chinaka in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State.
The suspects were paraded at the SSS Headquarters in Owerri, the Imo State capital, in the presence of the State Governor, Rochas Okorocha.
The Director of SSS in the state, Mr Francis Ejiofor, said that the command is desirous to curb the trend and menace of kidnapping in the state and as such set up a special task force to address the issue of kidnapping and one of the early successes of the new task force was the arrest of the 6-man gang of suspected kidnappers and the rescue of the kidnap victim alive.
Governor Rochas Okorocha commended security operatives in the state for trying to see that kidnapping and related criminal activities are reduced in the state.
He assured the people of the state that the state government would provide adequate support and partnership to all security operatives in the state in order to make Imo a peaceful and crime free state.

Unknown gunmen on Thursday stormed Katsak Village in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna, killing 13 and injuring 15 others.
The incident happened while residents were celebrating their annual cultural festival amid funfair as the ceremony that began peacefully turned bloody, leaving the people in a state of confusion and devastation.
The attack took the residents by surprise as they never expected it. The victims included men, women and children.
Angered by this latest attack, the people of the area have condemned government’s effort at providing security to them, calling on both the federal and state governments to step up the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the area.
Also shaken by the high scale destruction of lives and property in the southern part of Kaduna State, the Senator representing the zone in the National Assembly, Danjuma La’ah, has called for a thorough investigation as well as a proactive action to end the rampage of gunmen against his people.
The senator also wants the Federal Government to rebuild all destroyed villages just as in the northeast and also train local vigilantes to compliment the effort of security operatives in the affected areas.
There had been constant clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in the southern part of Kaduna state over grazing land.
Such bloody clashes over the years have claimed more than 500 lives.
