Insufficient Funding Caused Digital Broadcast Transmission Failure - NBC

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has attributed its failure to facilitate transmission switch over from analogue to digital broadcast transmission in Nigeria to insufficient funding.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which is the global telecoms regulatory body had set June 17, 2015 as the deadline for the switchover from analogue to digital broadcast transmission, but the NBC failed to meet the deadline.

There is no date set yet, for the migration from analogue to digital broadcast transmission in Nigeria.

Nigerians had anticipated the switch over which obviously comes with its many advantages, which include clarity of programmes, quality of signals and contents, as well as spectrum efficiency.

In an interview with Channels Television, the former Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Peter Igho, revealed that the successful migration from analogue to digital transmission in the industry was in dire need of funding by the government and political will.

In the same vein, Chairman of Digiteam Nigeria, Edward Amana, noted that quality content development goes beyond technology.

Digitisation is the direction for broadcast industry globally, and according to experts, the earlier Nigeria moves to make it a reality, the better, otherwise the nation may be left behind in the technological broadcast advancement.

Kashamu: Court To Hear Contempt Charge Against FG On Tuesday

Buruji Kashamu

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has fixed tomorrow, Tuesday, June 23, to rule on the contempt proceedings filed by Senator Buruji Kashamu against the Federal Government for allegedly disobeying an order of the court.

The trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, fixed the date after rejecting an application by the NDLEA asking for the vacation of the order which restrained security agencies in Nigeria from arresting or extraditing Senator Kashamu on allegations of drug trafficking.

The NDLEA’s Director of Prosecution, Mr James Sunday, had told Justice Buba that the court was misled by Kashamu’s lawyer to grant the ex-parte order.

Justice Buba also rejected another application for a stay of the proceedings filed by Mr Emeka Ngige, the counsel representing the office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria had urged the court to stay the proceedings pending the hearing and determination of an appeal filed before the Court of Appeal.

NLNG Eyes $1.5 Bln Debut Ship Yard In Nigeria

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG) is sponsoring the construction of the first major ship yard in Nigeria at the cost of $1.5 billion, in its attempt to turn the country into a hub for maritime operations on the continent.

Nigeria does not have a drydock for maintaining and repairing large crude vessels, a major drawback for carriers sailing to the country, NLNG spokesman Tony Okonedo told Reuters.

Only South Africa had such a facility on the continent, Okonedo said, meaning that ships travelled a long distance for repairs. Nigeria has two facilities that can only accommodate small vessels, he said.

Okonedo said Samsung Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries have both agreed a $30 million commitment towards the construction of the facility, which would be located in Badagry, near Nigeria’s commercial capital of Lagos.

“It could potentially be used to transport the 2.5 million barrel a day crude business in Nigeria,” Okonedo said on the sidelines of a media briefing.

Okonedo said the NLNG organised a roadshow earlier this year to market the dry dock project to investors, which included multinational oil companies in Nigeria, with large exploration and upstream activities.

He said NLNG, which is owned by Nigeria’s state-oil company NNPC, Royal Dutch Shell, French oil company Total and Italy’s Eni was in discussions with a strategic investor for the project.

It appointed France’s BNP Paribas and Guaranty Trust Bank to help raise around $1.6 billion two years ago to build six new LNG carrier ships, expanding its fleet to 30.

The construction of the dry dock, with a size that can accommodate 185 football fields, will take up to 48 months to complete and would commence once all the funding was in place, he said.

The company, which was set up over two decades ago, has a capacity to produce 22 million metric tonnes of …read more

Apple Music Changes Policy After Taylor Swift Stand

In reaction to a statement by Taylor Swift saying she was refusing to allow the company to stream her album 1989, Apple Music has reversed its payment policy.

In an open letter to Apple, Swift said she was withholding the record as she was unhappy with the three-month free trial offered to subscribers.

On Twitter, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, said Apple Music will pay artist for streaming, even during customer’s free trial period.

Swift had said the plan was “unfair”, arguing Apple had the money to cover the cost.

”I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company,” the 25-year-old said, describing Apple as one of her “best partners in selling music”.

”Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing.

”We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.”

Apple Music launches on 30 June. It will cost $9.99 (£6.30) per month in the US for one person or $14.99 for families.

After hearing news of the company’s decision on Sunday night, Swift tweeted:

Meanwhile, Mr Cue said he did not know if the ‘Shake It Off’ singer would now make her album available on Apple Music, but he praised her for taking a stand.

“When I woke up this morning and I saw Taylor’s note that she had written, it really solidified that we needed to make a change,” he said.
