President Goodluck Jonathan has assured Nigerians that the second Niger Bridge will be completed within the next forty months.

The bridge is seen as crucial to easing the load on the Niger bridge, considering the increase in vehicle movement to the eastern part of the nation.

There have been criticisms over the slow pace of work on the bridge, with some persons saying that nothing was happening at the site.

At a meeting with the traditional ruler of the commercial city of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Achebe, President Jonathan expressed satisfaction at the pace and quality of work done so far at the site of the construction as he first went on inspection tour before visiting the Obi of Onitsha.

President Jonathan was in Anambra State on Saturday for the presidential campaign rally.

The Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, alongside the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Achebe and other dignitaries were at the meeting that was held at the palace of the King.

After exchanging pleasantries with his hosts, the President narrated the event of his visit to the site of the second Niger Bridge construction and cleared rumours that nothing was going on at the site.

He said that what he saw on ground had boosted his morale, expressing confidence that the bridge would be completed within the next 40 months.

In his explanation, he said out of the 130 billion Naira contract sum, 10 billion Naira had already been spent out of which 1.5 billion Naira was used to pay compensation for damages.

According to him, work on the ten kilometre road had reached an advanced stage.

In his speech, Governor Obiano assured the President that Anambra State would give him 100 per cent support for a resounding victory at the polls.

Over 5000 members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Orlu Local Government Area in Imo State have defected to the people’s Democratic Party (PDP).

At a rally held to receive the defectors at Saint Mary Primary school ground in Orlu town, the chairman of the PDP in the state, Mr Nnamdi Anyahie and other stalwarts of the party said the development was an indicator that “Imo State is predominantly a PDP state”.

They believe the defection would also boost the morale of the party in winning elections at all levels in the state come February.

Mr Anyahie maintained that the PDP in the state had put all strategies in place to claim the Governorship seat in the state in the coming elections.

“That is the main reason why members of other parties are identifying with the PDP,” he said.

The incumbent Governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, is a member of the All Progressives Congress but was elected on the platform of the APGA. He had already started a statewide campaign to seek indigenes support in the governorship election.

He defected to the APC in 2013 along with some other governors that were members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

At a campaign rally on Saturday Governor Okorocha maintained that he remained a candidate to beat in the governorship election that will hold in February, as his good record of performance in the last three and a half years remained a landmark achievement in the history of governance in the state.

He promised that if elected into office for the second time, apart from consolidating the existing programmes, he would provide more industries, factories and job opportunities for the people of the state.

At a campaign rally held in Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, the Governor rolled out his agenda for his second term in office if …read more

The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Perry Calderwood, has launched a media campaign against child early and forced marriages in developing countries including Nigeria.

According to him, over 15 million children globally are forced into early marriage each year, leading to an unbroken circle of illiteracy and poverty.

Mr Calderwood solicited for the support of the public to end the trend ahead of a global photo exhibition entitled “Too Young To Wed”.

There have been cases of child marriage in Nigeria and some other developing countries, most of which were consummated as a result of culture, religious belief and the quest for survival in places where poverty rate is high.
