The Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) has denounced the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s candidate for the February 14 presidential elections.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the Acting National Chairman of the party, Dr Manzo Abubakar says the January 9, 2015 convention presided over by Dr Frederick Faseun is an illegal one which lacks the powers to endorse any presidential candidate.

Dr Abubakar, who distanced the National Executive Committee of the party from the said endorsement, advised President Jonathan not to attach any importance to the endorsement on the grounds that Doctor Faseun is a suspended member of the party.

Abubakar said, “The National Executive Committee of the UPN on behalf of the party and its teeming members and supporters denounce this (endorsement) and urge Nigerians, including President Jonathan and his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), not to attach any importance to the bogus endorsement.

“It is on record that Dr. Fasehun was suspended as the national chairman of the Unity Party at the NEC meeting held in Abuja on 13th October 2014 for anti-party activities among which were taking unilateral actions.

“Dr. Manzo Abubakar, the deputy national chairman, was subsequently appointed the Acting National Chairman.”

The party said in a clear departure from what is happening in several political parties, the UPN is not contesting the presidential election but that it will be fielding candidates at the governorship and other levels in the elections.

According to the organization, “Evasive and obfuscatory commitments by politicians undermine transparency and accountability of elected public officials and contribute to bad governance. By making a clear and unequivocal commitment to implement the proposed 7-point program, Nigerians will be able to make an informed and unbiased decision to vote for issues and not personalities. They will also be able to compare what you are promising to do and what you actually do while in the office.”

“We believe that the president after the election must come to term with the reality of massive high-level official corruption, and the devastation and suffering it has caused millions of innocent Nigerians,” the organization said.
