We will not dialogue with bandits — CAS


The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, on Wednesday stated that the Nigerian Army was not considering having any dialogue with bandits.

He also said that strategies to end the incessant banditry in a state like Katsina has to be comprehensive.

The CAS who was speaking at a conference to mark the commencement of the 2020 Nigerian Army Day celebration in Faskari, Katsina said security challenges must be tackled head on, adding that troops were ready to combat bandits even if it meant going inside the forest to dig them out.

Buratai said, “Whatever measures to end banditry must be comprehensive. It could involve political solution; it could involve military solution. The aim is to have a peaceful community.

“As far as the Nigerian Army is concerned, dialogue with bandits is not on our table. Even if we have to move into the bush and deal with the bandits, we are ready to deal with them wherever they are.”

He said Operation Sahel Sanity which will be introduced during the course of the week has the objective to significantly improve the professional capacity of the soldiers.

Buratai said he has never compromised on the constant development of the soldiers professional capacity, stating that “There has not been any dull moment in terms of training to ensure the professional efficiency of soldiers and make them ever prepared to deal with security challenges.”

The CAS said some of activities lined up to mark the 2020 Nigerian Army Day celebration include giving out palliatives to those in need in all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and also conduct the Chief of Army Staff commendation award parade.
