Ugandan court sentences man to 11 years imprisonment for killing gorilla

A man in Uganda has been sentenced to eleven years imprisonment for killing a rare silverback gorilla.

The gorilla was a 25 year old male named Rafiki and was the dominant figure in a family of 17 mountain gorillas. The killer pleaded guilty to the charges. Stating that he did it in self defense.

Tourism via the National parks has been a major source of funding for the country and maintaining the wild life amid the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging raising concerns as the industry is on the brinks of collapse.

The mountain gorilla is an endangered specie as a result of increased poaching activities in the region.

An estimate of 1000 gorillas live in protected areas in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.
