Mauritius declares environmental state of emergency

Mauritius has declared an environmental state of emergency after a Japanese vessel collapsed on the shore of the country, spilling fuel into the sea.

The president who disclosed this via a tweet said that the vessel presents a grave danger for the people of his country and confessed that Mauritius does not have the capacity to handle the problem.

President Jugnauth has reached out to France for assistance and has asked the French president Emmanuel Macron to kindly respond positively.

The vessel, the MV Wakashio about three weeks ago ran aground on a coral reef off the island of Mauritius and due to bad weather the leaking has gotten worse.

According to Greenpeace Africa “thousands” of animal species are ” risk being drowned in a sea of pollution, and will bring about adverse consequences for Mauritius’ economy, food security and health”.
