Kamala Harris becomes first woman to get US presidential powers


US Vice-President Kamala Harris became the first woman to briefly be given presidential powers as Joe Biden underwent his regular health check.

President Biden transferred power to Harris for the period in which he was placed under anaesthesia for a routine colonoscopy on Friday.

The president underwent the routine physical at the Walter Reed military hospital outside Washington.

White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said Biden spoke to Harris and White House chief of staff Ron Klain after the procedure and was “in good spirits.”

The medical examination was Biden’s first as president and came on the eve of his 79th birthday.

Harris temporarily took control of the US military and nuclear weapons.

Harris, 57, is the first woman – and the first black and South Asian American – to be elected US vice-president.

Psaki said the temporary transfer of powers in such circumstances was not unprecedented, and that it was part of the process set out in the US constitution. Continue Reading
