ECOWAS leaders meet with military Junta in Mali, lay demands


Mali’s junta must name a civilian leader on Tuesday, as the top military officers meet with West African leaders who are likewise calling for new elections within a year.

The 15-country local alliance known as ECOWAS gathered for a meeting in Ghana, with its new president Nana Akufo-Addo also joining in.

The coalition has set a final proposal for a return to democratic rule within a year and has requested that a civilian rules the country in the interim.

The military junta upheld a plan for a 18-month transition government on Saturday. In any case, they stated that the interim president picked to manage the temporary government could emerge out of the military.

The junta held onto power in an August 18 coup that ousted president Boubacar Keita.
