COVID-19: Uganda receives evacuees from across the globe


The east African nation of Uganda is welcoming several evacuees from across the world. Some of the countries include Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.

Of the 137 returnees from Afghanistan, most were private security guards who Saturday evening aboard Egypt Air. Other arrivals included humanitarian workers and diplomats from Juba, South Sudan and Addis Ababa.

A total of 207 have been sent to quarantine centres. The country is still expecting more evacuees from India, UAE, South Africa and the US.

A report that it’s citizens based in China had refused to return to the country which continues to spark reactions which are disputing widely reported claims made by the foreign affairs minister last week.

Minister Henry Okello Oryem said to Daily Monitor newspaper that a lot of Ugandans living in China had resumed work after their government intervened after hearing reports of mistreatment.

The ministry, in a press statement described the protests by Africans living in China against maltreatment there as having been a result of “miscommunication among local authorities about how to handle foreign nationals as they control the spread of coronavirus”.
