Breaking: Scores Dead and many still trapped as building collapses in Lagos – Watch Video


As the people of Lagos state, Nigeria’s mega city went about their daily activities and celebrated the new month while engaged in different commercial activities, tragedy struck in a most shocking manner. A 21-storey building under construction collapsed in the Ikoyi area of Lagos around 2pm in the afternoon. An officer of the Lagos State Emergency Agency, Nosa Okunbo confirmed the incident and deployment of heavy duty equipment to help with the rescue. The number of fatalities are still unknown.

Witnesses revealed that the developer of the site was also trapped in the rubbles of the collapsed building. A letter from structural engineers written last year gave a “STOP WORK” notification due to the substandard quality of work and materials used for the building project. This was however ignored as work continued at the site afterwards. The construction continued secretly, violating the subsequent directive of the Lagos state government as well.
