Breaking News: President Buhari to appear before House of Representatives over insecurity

The House of Representatives has set out to invite the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to address members in plenary over the security emergencies across the nation.

Prior, plenary at the House of Representatives turned unruly on Tuesday as individuals were forcefully divided over a motion trying to invite Buhari to show up before the lawmakers to clarify the rising spate of insecurity in the nation.

The House was thinking about a motion moved by individuals from Borno State on the ongoing murder of 43 rice farmers in the state by Boko Haram insurgents.

Part of petitions was to invite Buhari to show up on the floor of the House and address the lawmakers in plenary.

Endeavors by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila; Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa; and Chairman, House Committee on Air Force, Shehu Koko, among others, to have the petition dropped proved fruitless.

Gbajabiamila’s plea that a state of emergency be received rather was additionally rebuked.

The speaker was forced to ask that the lawmakers have an executive (closed-door) session.

Emerging from the closed-door session, Gbajabiamila asked one of the sponsors of the motion, Ahmad Jaha, to make an amendment to the motion.

Jaha petitioned the House to invite the president as proposed in the original motion.

The Speaker put the amended motion to a voice vote and it was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.
