BREAKING: Acting UNILAG VC Soyombo steps down

Following the Federal Government’s mandates on Friday that the University of Lagos Senate names an acting Vice-Chancellor, recently delegated acting VC, Prof Omololu Soyombo, has ventured down “with immediate effect”.

The governing council lead by the Pro-Chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin, had delegated Soyombo a week ago after it fired Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

Soyombo, in an announcement on Saturday, said it was fundamental he did so on the grounds that the administration had guided the UNILAG Senate to select an acting VC for the varsity.

“The news of the setting up of a Special Visitation Panel to the University of Lagos by the Federal Government was received in the evening of Friday, 21st August 2020. The government also directed the University Senate to nominate an Acting Vice-Chancellor for the University, for confirmation by the Governing Council. With this, I am stepping down, with immediate effect, as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University,” he said.

Soyombo asked all staff and students of the institution to keep on approaching their legal exercises in a tranquil way.

“I wish to communicate my true thankfulness to all individuals from staff and our dear students, the staff unions, alumni and the general public for their wonderful support and cooperation in the past ten days since my arrangement as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University on twelfth August 2020.

“As I noted in my location to a cross-segment of staff on 19th August 2020, I acknowledged the proposal to fill in as a call to support, with the target of reestablishing harmony and soundness in the college.

“It is my petition that the harmony and dependability that we so much need and want as of now be reestablished rapidly, with the goal that the University of Lagos can keep on walking on as the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride,” he finished up.
