Akinwumi Adesina cleared of all corruption allegations

The president of the African Development Bank, Mr. Akinwumi Adesina has been cleared of all corruption allegations against him. The investigative panel was lead by the former Irish president Mary Robinson.

Adesina who is the first Nigerian to hold the position has been president of the AFDB since 2015. However earlier this year, a 15-page allegation report was laid against the president accusing him of favoritism, impunity, personal enrichment and poor governance.

The investigate panel comprised of three prominent leaders: former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson, Gambia’s Chief Justice Hassan Jallow and World Bank’s integrity vice president Leonard McCarthy. They cleared Adesina of all allegations.

“The Panel concurs with the Committee in its findings in respect of all the allegations against the President and finds that they were properly considered and dismissed by the Committee,” Monday’s report stated.

Amid all of the allegations against Adesina, he has always maintained his innocence.

It was earlier reported that the AFDB’s Ethics’ Committee, which first investigated the allegations, found him innocent of all allegations and their report was accepted by the Board of Governors, however the United States rejected the report and demanded a fresh probe be launched by an independent body.

The board subsequently authorized an independent review of the Ethics Committee report on the president, who has received the support of Nigeria and other African countries ahead of his reelection next month.
