Rohr laments increasing eagles injury list

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has expressed worry over the injuries copped by the Super Eagles players ahead of their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa next month.

 

Nigeria, who top Group E with nine points, take on Bafana Bafana, who are second in the group with eight points, in a crunch tie on November 17 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

 

 

A win for the Eagles in the tie seals qualification for the continental showpiece after their absence at the last two editions in 2015 and 2017.

 

But the team have recently been hit with injuries to some key players after their double-header qualifiers against Libya. Ogenyi Onazi, Shehu Abdullahi, William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo and Henry Onyekuru are currently out with varying degrees of injuries.

 

 

Rohr, who spoke on Monday Night Football on Supersports, said, “Unfortunately, ahead of the South Africa game, we have some injuries and we have to keep watching out for more. The two games in four days against Libya and the stress of travelling between Nigeria and Tunisia and back to their clubs was very difficult to some of the players – which contributed to their having injuries.

 

“Omeruo and Ekong couldn’t complete their games at their clubs over the weekend and they joined Shehu and Onazi, who were already injured during the Libya game. But I learnt their injuries were not so serious and they will only miss one or two matches after which they will be fit for games again.
