FIFA Ranking: Nigeria 6th in Africa, 38th in the world

Nigeria are the 38th best team in the world and sixth in Africa, according to the latest FIFA ranking for the month of August released on Thursday.

The Super Eagles latest position is one up from last month’s 39th place in the world, while they maintained their position on the continent behind Egypt, Senegal, Congo DR, Tunisia, and Cameroon respectively.

Meanwhile, Brazil have knocked Germany off the top of the FIFA rankings.

World champions Germany dropped to second despite winning the Confederations Cup last month after some rolling historical results were devalued.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina are in third and modest Switzerland, with a 100 per cent record in World Cup qualifiers, are fourth, which is higher than they have been since 1994.

Poland, who boast Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski amongst their ranks, are at a historic high of fifth having dropped just two points in their own qualifiers as European champions Portugal dropped two places to fifth.

The Super Eagles have now retained their stay in the top 10 teams in Africa for the ninth consecutive month despite their failure to play at the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and a recent 2-0 loss to South Africa in a 2019 AFCON qualifier.

Egypt, who are 25th in the world with 866 points, are Africa’s number one. They dropped a spot from the 24th position they occupied last month. DR Congo remained 28th in the world and are second on the continent.

West Africans Senegal (31) also dropped a spot to rank third while Tunisia (34) with 776 points are fourth while 2017 African champions Cameroon are fifth after climbing up a spot from 36th last month to 35th.

Burkina Faso, Algeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast complete the top 10 on the continent.

On the global scene, Brazil returned to the top of the world rankings after they were second last month. Germany are second while Argentina, Switzerland and Poland are third, fourth and fifth.

Portugal, Chile, Colombia, Belgium and France complete the top 10 in the world.
