The deadly Ebola virus crisis in Sierra Leone has cancelled Christmas celebration for some people.

The government has declared lockdown of at least three days in the north of the country to try to contain the epidemic.

Shops, markets and non-Ebola related travel services will be shut down, officials said.

Muslims and Christians are not allowed to hold services in mosques and churches throughout the lockdown except for Christians on Christmas Day.

Only vehicles officially assigned to Ebola-related assignments would be allowed to operate during the period.

The lock down would operate for at least three days but this could be extended if deemed necessary, officials said.

The Word Health Organization (WHO) says more than 7,500 people have died from the outbreak in West Africa so far, with Sierra Leone the worst hit.

Sierra Leone has the highest number of Ebola cases in West Africa, with more than 9,000 cases and more than 2,400 deaths since the start of the outbreak.

Sierra Leone has been in a state of emergency since July.

Headed Goals Special To Me – Giroud

Giroud

Olivier Giroud says he gets a “special satisfaction” from scoring an old-fashioned centre forward’s header.

The France striker has found the net four times since returning from injury but it was his first goal against Newcastle United that gave him the greatest pleasure.

However, despite scoring four headers in his last five games against the Magpies, Giroud told Arsenal’s official matchday programme that his aerial ability is a skill he still needs to improve.

“It’s a special satisfaction because people say when you are tall you have to score more goals with your head,” he explained.

“I was a bit frustrated to miss the chance against Stoke because it could’ve been a good comeback when we were 1-0 down. It was a great delivery and I didn’t snatch it properly.

“I was telling myself that I will score the next cross and that was against Newcastle. Alexis made a good cross and the most important thing is that my timing was right. I had a run-up as well.

“It’s surprising to hear but headers aren’t my best quality. I have the timing but I still need to work on the technique. You always have a side you prefer more than the other one, so I try to work on it every week and it’s something I can improve,” Giroud said.

Another Batch Of Soldiers Sentenced To Death By Court Martial

court martial

The court martial sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday night, delivered its verdict in the case of conspiracy to commit mutiny and incitement of mutiny involving 5 soldiers.

LCPL Sule Ochehepo was discharged and acquitted, while LCPL Bankole Taiwo, LCPL Bankole Olawale, LCPL Isaiah Olofu and PTE Adebayo Gbenga were convicted and sentenced to death.

The allegation against the soldiers was that they asked “inciting questions” from their Commanding Officer of 81 Batallion when he addressed them on September 14, 2013.

The questions pertained to the corpses of some of their colleagues brought to the camp after they were killed by the Boko Haram terrorists due to lack of weapons.

The charge of mutiny was that the 5 soldiers “incited soldiers of 81 Bn to mutiny against the authority of 7 Division of Nigerian Army”.

They pleaded double jeopardy that they had been tried summarily by their Commanding Officer, convicted and sentenced and that they had served the punishment.

The record of proceedings of the earlier trial was tendered and admitted in evidence by the court martial but the court martial headed by Brig-General M.S Yusuf did not consider the defence of the soldiers.

Altogether, 71 soldiers have been sentenced to death for protesting against the non-payment of salaries and allowances and failure of the authorities to provide equipment to confront the well-equipped Boko Haram troops.

Hundreds of other soldiers are currently awaiting trial in Abuja, Jos and Lagos for mutiny, negligence and cowardice and allied offences.

They are due to be arraigned after the Christmas vacation.

Obiano

Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, in his special Christmas message to the people of Anambra State, says the 2014 Christmas for Nigerians is a time to heal the country with love.

He observed that in the outgoing year, while the nation reeled from the shock waves of bloodbath caused by terrorists in the North, they suddenly woke to the horrifying nightmare of the Ebola Virus epidemic which ultimately, with love, the country triumphed over.

He noted that victory over the Ebola virus disease is a proof that victory is sure if Nigerians are united in love against any enemy.

Governor Obiano also said that though the optimum was yet to be attained in building bonds of love and unity in Anambra State, he had no doubt that the chances were brighter than before.

He said that with the bold efforts being made on expanded security network in the state, as well as the struggle in strengthening the bonds of brotherhood in the hearts of the people, the bonds of love would be more strengthened in the state.
