Kaduna

About 15 people were reportedly killed by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen at Ambe-Madaki village in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The attack came barely a week after some gunmen attacked Tattauru village in the same local government, and killed ten people and injured several others.

An eyewitness account said that the gunmen, who were armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the village around 4am on Friday morning and started shooting sporadically and setting houses ablaze in the process.

He said that scores of residents of the area sustained varying degrees of injuries from gun shots while over 20 houses in the area were set ablaze.

When contacted by our correspondent, the former Chairman of the local government, Emmanuel Adamu, said that he was not in the best position to make any official statement on the attack as their tenure ended some weeks ago.

The former Chairman added that he was also out of the country as at the time the incident took place and therefore had no details.

The spokesman for the Kaduna State Police Command, Aminu Lawan, could not be reached for comments, but a security source in Sanga, who craved anonymity, confirmed the attack.

Nigeria Acquires New Warship

Warship

The Nigerian Navy has acquired a warship as part of efforts to tackle the issue of insecurity in the country.

After five weeks and three stops in Trinidad and Tobago, Senegal and Ghana, the warship named NNS Okpabana – an Igala word for thunder – finally berthed in Lagos.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin, who received the vessel in Lagos, said that the arrival of the vessel would help the Navy improve its war on maritime crimes.

“It is worthy of note to state that the successes recorded by NNS Thunder in curtailing threats in our maritime domain and the larger Gulf of Guinea region, with the confidence reposed in our country by the USA, that made it possible to acquire NNS Okpabana.

“The addition of this ship into the NN fleet will certainly bolster our zeal to end the menace in our maritime domain and the region, as well as support the regional and global effort to eliminate transnational maritime threats.

“This nation has always requested the navy to do more and with this, the government recognises that there must be needed platform for the navy to do its job well.

“The present government headed by President Goodluck Jonathan took the recapitalisation of fleets as a huge challenge and has invested huge funds through the acquisition of two Off-Shore Patrol Vessels (OPV) from China and this one from USA.

“It is hoped that by the time we take delivery of all, the NN will be better for it,’” Jibrin said.

The unique event, which took place at the Naval dockyard in Lagos, brought together officers from the Nigerian Navy, Army, Police, personnel of the United States Embassy and military and other special guests.

REC Laments Low Turnout For PVC Collection In Niger

The Niger State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Nasiru Ayilara, has lamented the poor turnout of the electorate for the collection of the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) across the state.

The new Resident Electoral Commissioner, during an interview, noted that only 28% of eligible voters across the state has collected their Permanent Voters Card (PVC).

“Eleven Local Governments have finished their own distributions at the PU (Polling Unit) level, (while) its still ongoing at the Local Government level.

“For the 11 Local Governments that have finished, reliably we have recorded 28% but for the 14 Local Governments still ongoing, we are still awaiting the figures from the field,” he said.

He added that the situation might require more awareness from the electoral body; “We might take another proactive measure locally by going back to our various wards again…just as to ensure that our people have their cards before February.”

He appealed to residents of the state to endeavour to collect their cards at the commission’s offices across the state, as that remained the only way they would be able to participate in the forthcoming general elections.
