Cleric Wants Government To Allow Religious Groups Own TV Stations

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has appealed to the Federal Government to remove the restrictions on the setting up of television stations by religious organisations.

Cardinal Onaiyekan made the appeal in Abuja on Wednesday at a forum to discuss the future of the Catholic Television Project.

He said the electronic media was an effective tool for evangelism and the spread of the message of peace which Nigeria needed at this time.

“One tool in our hands to propagate the gospel is the use of the catholic television as a medium for teaching and edification,” he emphasised.

Nigeria is facing lingering security crises mostly in the north-east. Thousands have been killed and many rendered homeless.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja believes that the Catholic Television would help spread the message of love and peace in this trying time.

It is a common opinion of the persons that gathered at the event.

The Director of Communications, Reverend Father Patrick Alumuku, said: “In this challenging time many people are turning to the Catholic Church to seek support and answers to the difficulties posed by moral, economic and political problems”.

He stressed that the Church was looking to address these issues and further propagate the gospel through the television channel.

At least 10,000 delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, south-west Nigeria, to pick the party’s flag-bearer for the 2015 presidential election that will hold on February 14.

At the APC presidential primaries holding on Wednesday, delegates drawn from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, will choose from the aspirants seeking to be the party’s candidate for the 2015 election.

Five aspirants are vying for the position. They are; a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari; Governor of Kano State, Rabi’u Kwankwaso; Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha and the publisher of Leadership newspapers, Sam Nda-Isaiah.

The person picked at the end of the APC presidential primaries would face President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, who seem to have the support of majority of his party members.

President Jonathan was earlier been given the party’s sole candidacy, but the decision was upturned by the party’s leadership, giving others an opportunity to declare their interest in the position.

One of the APC presidential ticket aspirants, Mr Abubakar had told Channels Television that choosing the candidate through a consensus would be undemocratic.

Displaced persons and victims of terror attacks in Nigeria’s north-east are asking the government to expedite actions to restore peace to their communities to enable them return home.

Representatives of the victims, who spoke at a forum in Abuja on Wednesday, said “relief materials from government agencies, churches and individuals alone were not enough to ease their pains”.

They called on the government to do all it could to restore peace to their communities to enable them return to their normal lives.

Some of the victims got food items from the committee managing the fund in Abuja, four months after the Federal Government had launched the Victims Support Fund.

According to the Executive Director of the Fund, Sunday Ochoche, the relief materials will restore hope to victims who have suffered in the hands of the Boko Haram sect.

As much as the relief materials have been provided and distributed, the victims are still eager to go back to their communities.

The Federal Government’s Victims Support Fund targets 50 billion Naira to assist victims of Boko Haram in the north-east.

Officials believe that if the fund is properly managed, victims will be re-integrated into the society and return to their normal lives .

The Boko Haram has attacked villages, towns, churches, mosques and other public places in the north-east, making people to flee the area.

Pistorius Case: South African Judge Thokozile Masipa Accepts Procecutors Appeal

South African prosecutors on Wednesday won their bid to appeal the culpable homicide verdict handed down to Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and will now seek a murder conviction

The South African judge Thokozile Masipa has ruled that prosecutors can appeal against the acquittal on murder charges of Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius .

Judge Thokozile Masipa said prosecutors could appeal against the acquittal, but not the five-year sentence given for the lesser charge of culpable homicide.

State prosecutor, Gerrie Nel, said in his application to appeal on Tuesday that the judgement was “shockingly inappropriate” and requested permission to seek a murder conviction, which would carry a minimum 15 year jail term.

Nel argued that even if Pistorius did not know Steenkamp was behind the door when he fired, the athlete showed intent to kill whoever was in the small toilet cubicle.

Pistorius’ lawyers had opposed the appeal request.

The case will now go before South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal.

During the seven-month trial, the state failed to convince Judge Thokozile Masipa, 67, of Pistorius’ intent to kill when he fired, leading to his conviction for negligent killing – culpable homicide – and a five-year jail term in October.

Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated as a baby, killed Steenkamp on February 14 last year by firing four 9mm rounds into the locked door of a toilet cubicle in what he said was the mistaken belief an intruder was hiding behind it.
